About Shibari:
In Japanese the word ‘shibari’ simply means ‘to tie’, but the contemporary meaning of the word describes an artistic form of Japanese rope bondage. Originating from the ancient martial art, Hojojutsu, and the work of turn of the century artist, Seiu Ito, Shibari was popularised in 1950s Japanese erotic magazines. It has now grown to become an aesthetic bondage form practised across the world, also described as Kinbaku.

Traditionally, 8m lengths of natural fibre rope are used to create geometric patterns that contrast beautifully with the human body’s natural curves. The experience is always a collaboration between the rigger and the model - the outcomes of which can explore notions of visual beauty, sexuality, power exchange, relaxation and challenges of the body.

Workshop will be led by Winter. She is a lifestyle Shibari practitioner who plays with rope as both a rigger (the person who ties) and a bunny (the person being tied). She has studied under the guidance of Shibari masters, Chiaki and Murasaki, and continues to hone her craft through self-ties and one-on-one practice sessions. Following the Yukimura style, her focus is to use rope to evoke feelings of intention, fantasy, and eroticism. While there are many styles and applications of shibari, Winter's approach highlights the feminine form and incorporates light restraints as a form of control for play purposes.
