A night in LA with Skirt Club: behind the scenes

When we were offered the opportunity to tell the world about our beautiful and bold brand, we seized it with both hands. Our team flew out to the city of angels and hosted a Skirt Club party like nothing you’ve ever seen. The champagne was flowing, the guests were glamorous, and the experience was one to remember.

We opened our doors to the crew at Epix, and will be slipping onto screens across the United States on June 12th: sharing Skirt Club’s secrets, stories and successes. How we got here, where we are going, and what makes our elegant and exclusive community unique: it won’t be long until we are the hot topic on everyone’s lips!

I sat down with the wonderful women who worked their magic in front of the camera and told our story the way we want society to hear. The story of Skirt Club. Read on to hear from London Event Manager Seren Sins; Australia Director Ms Foxxx; and the original Skirt Club Girl herself Genevieve Lejeune.

1. What was the deciding factor behind being a part of this documentary?

Genevieve:

For so long, we have been portrayed as a sex party for women. But that’s not all we are. The opportunity to narrate our own story came along, and I jumped at it. Not just to really show people what Skirt Club is, but to show them who we are. Who the women who attend are. Who I am. There was no deciding factor as such, but rather a recognition that the time was right. We have come so far in 7 years - it was time to celebrate the journey! I have always wanted to do something like this, but it finally felt authentic and true to who we are. The show itself is open minded, fun and sexy. Which is us in a nutshell!

2. Was it fun having cameras around?

Ms Foxxx:

I don't know if I would call it fun - it was an experience, that's for sure. I wouldn't say it was unnerving either but some members were definitely apprehensive and less playful than a party without cameras. It was wonderful to have interest in shining a light on Skirt Club and what we do. And it was an amazing experience to be part of such a production with such a large crew and everyone involved.

Seren Sins:

It was certainly a full Hollywood experience! The team went far beyond just the camera operators... sound recorders, editors, directors, producers, editors, lighting techs, runners and all sorts were there on the night - they were just well hidden from the party! We filmed on the same weekend that LA hosted the Oscars – how very fitting it was to be part of such a glamourous production.

Genevieve:

It was unique! Skirt Club is such a private club, I was surprised to see just how much everyone got involved. I don’t particularly enjoy being in the spotlight, but the creative process; the team atmosphere; and the reality of what we were creating was amazing. We had an all female crew, and it really was fantastic to see the event from a different angle to how I usually do.

3. How did you feel representing the brand?

Ms Foxxx:

It was a true honour to be able to participate and be part of such a momentous occasion - not only for the brand but women in general.

Seren Sins:

Proud. Inspired. Honoured. Sexy AF.

4. Do you think there are misconceptions about what we are about?

Ms Foxxx:

Absolutely - that we are simply a sex party but we are so much more than that.

Seren Sins:

Oh, there are plenty. But part of what we do is to educate others – not just on who we are, but on what we’re really all about, which is: understanding and exploring bisexuality, sex positivity, non-monogamy, and most importantly, how we operate as a platform for women to express themselves freely, and grow in their understanding of themselves; their sexual and personal confidence and self-esteem.

Genevieve:

I think that we have evolved as time has passed. We have gone from being a small community to a global phenomenon, holding more events than ever and attracting more and more women. We are multi-faceted and it’s great to finally be able to show that. We also get the opportunity to alter preconceptions about bisexual women and female sexuality - it’s about normalising that aspect of a woman’s life and hopefully assuring anyone who watches that it’s perfectly natural.

5. What is your advice for women who are struggling to be comfortable with their sexuality?

Ms Foxxx:

Make it a priority to choose yourself. Get to know yourself, love yourself. When you come from a place of love and acceptance of yourself, I believe you will have more love and acceptance of others and it also won't matter what others think of you. You can accept differing opinions and perspectives with kindness and compassion for another's perspective whilst being able to stand tall in your own truth.

Seren Sins:

Be true to you. Once you understand and accept who you are, others will come to understand and accept you for all you are, as well.

Genevieve:

It’s just a part of who you are. But it’s not all you are. I think it’s important to recognise that being comfortable in our own skin is a real journey for women that is present throughout our lives. Sexuality is a part of that self acceptance; but it’s a part that can seem shameful and deviant because of how it has been viewed within society. My advice is not to worry, there is nothing bad about female sexual desire. It is important, and it is brave to explore it.

6. Do you think this insight into our events will change how we are perceived?

Ms Foxxx:

I hope that the documentary will help show how welcoming and not scary Skirt Club is - and encourage more 'every day' women to come and explore & connect.

Seren Sins:

I think it will give people a more educated insight. Something they’ve desired to know, but without giving away all our secrets.

Genevieve:

I hope that when people watch this, they’ll learn something about the inequality in attitudes towards sex for men and women. I think this will provide a new perspective on the gap there - the negativity that surrounds female sexuality, whilst the same isn’t true for males. I hope they’ll see a community of like-minded, curious, intelligent women; rather than hold on to any derogatory ideas about sexual liberation.

7. Is it important to you to normalise female sexual desire?

Ms Foxxx:

Absolutely - it's why I felt strongly about coming on board to support the brand by being a team member. I wanted to be part of the movement in changing the societal narrative.

Seren Sins:

Yes. It should be important to everyone.

Genevieve:

Yes. We’ve come a long way, but there is still more to do. Women have a right to want a fulfilling sex life, and a lot of that sexual confidence comes from getting to know themselves. What they need and want from that part of their lives. Our members recognise and demand that. I hope other women will learn to do the same.

8. What was your favourite part of the experience?

Ms Foxxx:

Meeting more global members and community and working with strong female producers interested in drawing light on hearing voices of the Skirt Club community.

Seren Sins:

Spending time with my colleagues – my Skirt Club Sisters – the women who I work with every day, to spread the message that we all stand for; proudly.

Genevieve:

I couldn’t ask for a more supportive team, simply because they speak from the heart. We only say what we mean. Everything about Skirt Club is real and authentic. In this world today, that’s something every human is craving.
